Sometimes some of our favorite activities actually provide a pretty good calorie burn. Rollerblading, dancing, walking, bowling, golf, and other activities combine entertainment, socializing, and a little bit of exercise to boot. Another activity that mixes both fun and fitness is pedal boating (sometimes called "paddle boating"). Pedal boats are often found in popular lakes and canals in Europe, the United States, and worldwide. For the busy and traveling lawyer or professional, pedal boats can be a fun way to explore a new place, enjoy the outdoors, and get a little calorie burn in.
Renting a Pedal Boat Abroad
Renting a pedal boat abroad is typically very easy, even when there is a language barrier. Pedal boats are usually hired out by the hour, and are in the $20-$30 range per hour used. When hiring a pedal boat, it is not uncommon for the boat rental company to ask for some sort of deposit or collateral, like a driver's license. Drinks and food are typically allowed on the boat, and it is, of course, important to remember to bring water to stay hydrated! The boat rental company will also usually provide some guidance on where to go (and where not to go). Staying out of the path of speedier and larger watercraft is a good protocol to adopt!
Benefits of Pedal Boating During a Break on Your Work Trip
There is no doubt that pedal boarding is a great way to have some fun and see the sights. In addition, getting fresh air and Vitamin D from the sun is a great way to spend an hour-or-so long break (even a lunch break!). In terms of exercise, pedal boating provides low-impact cardio, similar to biking. The intensity and resistance of the pedaling will depend on the model and condition of the boat and the condition of the wind and water. While estimates vary, and it will also depend on the individual, in general, a 150 pound person can burn around 270 calories per hour pedal boating (equivalent to one hour of biking for leisure at less than 10mph for an individual of the same weight).

Great Blog! Thank you for sharing these fitness tips. I thought my "training" days were behind me, traded in for long hours at the desk, as an attorney. But I recently started training for a 1/2 marathon and it feels so good to be getting active again. These tips remind me to be fun oriented not just goal oriented. 🙂
